The Canyon Diablo Stagecoach Robberies

Canyon Diablo, Arizona — a now-vanished frontier town near present-day Meteor Crater — was the site of two separate robberies that left significant caches of gold and silver unrecovered in the rugged canyon terrain of northern Arizona.

In 1881, a stagecoach carrying approximately $125,000 in gold bullion (in kegs) was robbed near Canyon Diablo. The outlaws fled into the canyon and were tracked and killed at Veit Spring by a pursuing posse. The gold was never found on their bodies or at the spring, meaning it was cached somewhere between the robbery site and Veit Spring during a roughly 20-minute pursuit window.

That pursuit window is the key. It bounds the search area geometrically: on foot with heavy loads across the terrain in question, the cache has to lie within a computable distance of the escape route rather than anywhere in the surrounding country.

Every version of the tale traces to a single 1985 treasure book citing an officer's report no researcher has ever produced, and a loss of that size does not appear in the 1885 Hume–Thacker Wells Fargo report covering 313 stagecoach robberies from 1870 to 1884. Eight years later, in 1889, a train was robbed near Canyon Diablo. [SECONDARY] The four men were pursued roughly 600 miles, caught near Cannonville, Utah on April 1, 1889, and imprisoned at Yuma; the take was about $3,200 and the prison and court records document the outcome.
