In 1885, a pamphlet appeared in Lynchburg, Virginia describing three encoded documents allegedly left by Thomas Jefferson Beale. According to the pamphlet, Beale and a group of companions had discovered a rich gold and silver deposit in the American West during the early 1820s, transported the metals back to Virginia, and buried them in Bedford County, encoding the location in three ciphers.
