Expedition Unknown's 'Chasing Civil War Gold': what do the records say about the 1865 wagon train robbery?
Verdict summary
The episode (Season 17, Episode 8, aired August 19, 2026) follows the wagon train robbed on May 24, 1865 at the Chennault plantation in Lincoln County, Georgia, near Washington, Georgia. The robbery is real and documented, but so is most of what happened to the money: General E. P. Alexander recovered about $70,000 from the raiders, plantation workers turned in about $40,000, and federal authorities seized the rest, which U.S. courts divided among claimants until 1893. What may remain is scattered coin around the old roads, on private land.
PinPoint Treasure's investigation follows the funds from Richmond (about $500,000 in specie, counted under Capt. William Harwar Parker's guard) through Danville and Charlotte to the Chennault raid, using the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, Parker's 1883 memoir and Alexander's 1907 memoir. About $250,000 was taken in the raid; coins were picked up from the roads in the days after.
The famous claim of '$13 million in Confederate gold' traces to a May 1865 War Department bounty proclamation, not to any count of the funds. Jefferson Davis had only a few dollars on him when captured at Irwinville, Georgia on May 10, 1865, because the treasury had been paid out along the way, with receipts (A. J. Hanna, Flight Into Oblivion, 1938).
Relic hunters have announced a candidate robbery site near Graball, Georgia, citing a 1925 family statement; that claim comes from their own promotional material and has not been independently verified. The Chennault family were wrongly arrested and abused by Union troops over this gold in 1865, and the land is private: any search needs the owner's permission.

What famous robbery loot was never recovered? Famous unrecovered loot includes most of D.B. Cooper's $200,000 ransom (1971), the 13 artworks stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (1990), and most of the cash and jewels from the 1978 Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport. Old West stagecoach and train robberies left many cache legends, though few have contemporary records of a hidden cache.
Which lost treasure stories are real? (Lost treasure that was never recovered) Few famous treasure stories survive a check of the newspapers printed at the time; in most, the loot was recovered, spent or never existed. One that does: a merchant's safe holding about $7,000, swept away when Arizona's Walnut Grove Dam failed on February 22, 1890. Prescott's Journal-Miner reported it was likely buried in sand about 15 miles below the dam and still unfound weeks later. Others, such as the Verdi (Nevada, 1870) and Jarbidge (Nevada, 1916) robberies, turn out to have been largely recovered.
What famous lost treasures have never been found? Famous lost treasures never found include the Lost Dutchman Mine (Arizona), the Amber Room (missing since 1945), the unlocated wrecks of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet (Florida), King John's baggage train (lost in The Wash, England, 1216), the Copper Scroll's 64 hiding places (Dead Sea Scrolls), Montezuma's gold (lost by the Spanish fleeing Tenochtitlan in 1520), the Beale treasure (Virginia) and the Oak Island money pit (Nova Scotia). The 'Nazi gold train' in Wałbrzych, Poland was dug for in 2016 and nothing was found.
