What famous treasures are still unfound?

Verdict summary

Famous treasures still unfound include the Amber Room (lost in 1945), the Lost Dutchman Mine in Arizona, the Beale treasure in Virginia, the Oak Island money pit in Nova Scotia, the Treasure of Lima, Paititi (the lost Inca city of gold) and the Kruger millions in South Africa. Many rest on a single late retelling, so some may never have existed.

The ones with the strongest records are those tied to documented events, such as wartime looting and shipwreck manifests. The weakest trace back to one author who cited a document nobody has seen.

PinPoint Treasure traces each story to its earliest source and publishes the verdict, including when a story fails.

Has the Beale treasure been found? No. The Beale treasure, said to be buried in Bedford County, Virginia, has never been found. Its story comes from an 1885 pamphlet with three ciphers. Only the second has been solved, using the Declaration of Independence as the key, and many researchers consider the whole story a hoax.

Has the Lost Dutchman Mine been found? No. The Lost Dutchman Mine, said to lie in Arizona's Superstition Mountains, has never been found. The legend centres on Jacob Waltz, who died in Phoenix in 1891. Much of the range is now the Superstition Wilderness, closed to new mining claims since 1984.

Has any treasure been found on Oak Island? No treasure hoard has been found on Oak Island, Nova Scotia, despite searches since the late 1700s. Searchers have reported small items such as coins and metal fragments, but nothing that proves a buried treasure exists.

What happened to the Amber Room? The Amber Room, a chamber of amber panels from Catherine Palace near St Petersburg, was looted by German forces in 1941 and taken to Königsberg (now Kaliningrad). It disappeared in 1945, near the end of the Second World War, and its fate is unknown. A reconstruction opened in 2003.
