Lost Stations of the Butterfield Trail — Where to Search, Vol. 8

Lost Stations of the Butterfield Trail is Volume 8 of the PinPoint Treasure Case Files. Fixing the unfixed station sites of the 1858 Overland Mail.

Every volume in this series follows the same standard of evidence. A claim is graded CONFIRMED only when it rests on a named primary source that we cite and quote; PLAUSIBLE when the record supports it but does not close it; HYPOTHESIS when it is our interpretation and we say so; and RULED OUT when the documentary or physical record contradicts it outright.

The research starts at the earliest surviving source rather than the current retelling. Most famous cache stories have a traceable point of origin — a newspaper column, a pamphlet, a magazine feature — and the details that make them compelling are usually added after that point. Establishing the origin date is the first test any claim has to pass here.

Where a location is in play, the documentary work is checked against terrain. Elevation models, historical topographic sheets, land-status records, and route reconstructions are used to ask whether the described events are physically possible in the described place, at the described speed, with the described load.

Null results are published. A volume that concludes a legend is fiction is as useful to a field researcher as one that narrows a search area, and considerably cheaper than finding out with a shovel. Land ownership and legal status are stated plainly in every volume, because most of these locations sit on federal, state, tribal, or private ground where detecting and digging are restricted or prohibited.
